FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything learners usually ask us before their first lesson. Can't find your answer? Call or email us and we'll help.

Nerves & confidence

Feeling anxious is normal. Here is how we help.

I'm nervous about learning to drive. Is that normal?

Completely normal, and far more common than most learners think. Many of our students start out anxious.

Your instructor will go at a pace that suits you and build your confidence step by step. Tell them how you feel at the start of your first lesson, and they will plan around it.

I'm returning to driving after a long break. Can you help?

Yes. Whether you're a complete beginner or coming back after time away, we'll meet you where you are and help you get where you want to be.

I had a bad experience with another instructor. What will be different?

Our instructors are carefully selected and continuously trained, and we teach in a client-centred way because no two learners are the same. You can also read about each instructor before you book, on our Our Team page.

Getting started

What you need before your first lesson.

What do I need before my first lesson?

A valid UK driving licence (provisional or full), which you must bring to every lesson.

You must be able to read a number plate from the distance set out in the Highway Code, wear any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving, and tell your instructor about any medical condition or medication that could affect your driving.

Should I learn in a manual or an automatic?

Manual lessons teach full control, including clutch and gears, and let you drive either type of car once you pass. Automatic lessons let you focus on the road, traffic and steering, and are often quicker to learn.

If you pass your test in an automatic, your full licence only covers automatic cars.

Are your instructors qualified?

Yes. Our instructors are DVSA Approved Driving Instructors (ADIs), registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and licensed to give driving tuition. They follow the DVSA Code of Practice for Approved Driving Instructors.

What cars will I learn in? Are they dual-controlled?

Every car we provide has dual controls, is roadworthy, taxed, has a valid MOT where relevant, and is fully insured for driving instruction.

Can I have lessons in my own car?

Sometimes, at your instructor's discretion. You would need to show that the car is roadworthy, taxed, has a valid MOT where relevant, and is insured for driving tuition.

Booking, cancellations & payment

How booking works and what happens if plans change.

How do I book lessons?

Choose a package and use the Book Now button anywhere on the site, or call us on 01223 658217 or email info@cambridgedriving.academy. After your first booking with us, you and your instructor agree the date, time, pick-up location and length of each lesson.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel a lesson free of charge with at least 48 hours' notice, and any money paid in advance for it is refunded.

With less than 48 hours' notice you may be charged, up to the full price of the lesson. In exceptional circumstances, such as illness, an accident or a bereavement, your instructor will consider waiving that charge.

If your instructor cancels with less than 48 hours' notice, you get 30 minutes of free tuition.

Read the full Terms & Conditions
What happens if I'm running late, or my instructor is?

Let your instructor know. If you are more than 30 minutes late, the lesson may be treated as cancelled without notice.

If your instructor is delayed by 30 minutes or more, you can cancel without paying, or keep the lesson and have the lost time added on free of charge.

How do I pay?

Lessons are paid in advance, by bank transfer, online payment or cash.

Can I get a refund on a block booking?

Yes. Refunds for unused lessons from a prepaid block are worked out pro rata at the lesson price for that package.

How much do lessons cost?

We have five packages: a 2 Hour Lesson (£85), a 10 Hours pack of five lessons (£390), and 20, 30 and 40 Hours Intensive courses (£770, £1,140 and £1,495). These are lesson prices, and they are the same for manual and automatic. All of them are on our pricing page.

Your driving test

Booking your test and what to expect on the day.

When should I book my practical test?

Check with your instructor before you book, so they can confirm you're ready. You book your theory and practical tests yourself, with the DVSA.

Once it's booked, tell your instructor the date and test centre at least 14 days beforehand.

Can I use my instructor's car for the test?

Usually, yes, at your instructor's discretion. If the car breaks down or is unavailable on the day, your instructor will try to arrange another one, and if they can't, they will pay for your replacement test.

Does the DVSA test fee cover my instructor?

No. The DVSA fee pays for the test itself. Your instructor's time and the use of their car on test day are charged separately.

What should I bring on test day?

All the documents the DVSA asks for, including your driving licence. Check your DVSA confirmation for the full list: without the right documents your test can be cancelled and the fee lost.

What if the DVSA cancels my test at short notice?

Your instructor's fees for that day are still payable, but your instructor will advise you on claiming compensation for them from the DVSA.
