Master the Basics: Control & Positioning for Driving Success

Passing your driving test isn't just about knowing the rules; it’s about making the vehicle an extension of yourself. At Cambridge Driving Academy, we focus on three core pillars of car control to help you achieve that first-time pass.

1. Mastering Your Controls (Skill 5)

When you're navigating the busy streets of Cambridge, operating your car should be second nature so your eyes can stay on the road.

  • Foot Controls: Smoothly coordinating your accelerator, clutch, and brake pedals is the secret to a jerky-free ride.

  • Hand Controls: You must be able to operate the steering wheel, indicators, gearstick, and parking brake without looking down.

  • The "Extras": Knowing how to quickly clear a foggy windscreen or when to legally use your horn is essential for safety and the practical test.

  • The Dashboard: You must understand every warning light and gauge on your instrument panel.

2. Moving Away & Stopping Safely (Skill 6)

Every journey starts and ends with these two actions. Doing them safely is a non-negotiable for your examiner.

  • The Routines: Always use MSM (Mirror – Signal – Manoeuvre) and PSL (Position – Speed – Look).

  • The "Four-Way" Move: You need to move off and stop safely on level ground, on hills (the dreaded hill start!), at angles, and straight ahead.

  • Blind Spots: Observation is key. You must know exactly where your blind spots are and check them every single time you move.

  • Smoothness: Coordinating your pedals ensures you slow down and speed up without stalling or surging.

3. Safe Positioning (Skill 7)

Your position on the road tells other drivers your intentions. Poor positioning can lead to confusion and accidents.

  • Lane Discipline: Plan ahead! Move into the correct lane in good time using your MSM routine.

  • Normal Driving: Keep a safe, central position during normal driving, but learn to adapt for bends and narrow roads.

  • Space is Safety: You must understand how much clearance to give cyclists, stationary vehicles, and obstructions.

  • One-Way Streets: Taking up the correct position on a one-way street is a common test requirement that requires careful planning.
